On its official Discord server, Bethesda Game Studios is asking for suggestions on how to improve Oblivion Remastered, and fans have no shortage of ideas.
Oblivion Remastered, which shadow dropped on April 22, updates the classic 2006 open-world RPG with upgraded Unreal Engine 5 visuals and a number of other smaller improvements, like a reworked UI and leveling-system. Aside from those tweaks, however, much of the game is how players remember it, warts and all.

Those warts are, of course, part of Oblivion’s charm, but some players on Reddit and Discord have ideas on how Bethesda might further improve upon the remastered version. In a thread on the Elder Scrolls subreddit (via Eurogamer) soliciting feedback to send to Bethesda, players suggested a number of changes, ranging from simple things like showing an item’s weight and current total weight while looting, markers to show when a dungeon has been cleared on the world map (a feature from Skyrim), the map automatically zooming into the local dungeon map while in a dungeon, the ability to eat food or read books while out in the game world rather than having to do it from the inventory screen, and many, many more.
Some of the bigger complaints players have is with the game’s difficulty system. Currently, the game’s default Adept difficulty is fairly easy, with it only becoming challenging when swarmed by large groups of enemies. However, bumping the difficulty up to the next level, Expert, makes it so even a single, basic enemy suddenly becomes a boss-level encounter. Players have suggested making changes to the difficulties, adding another difficulty in between Adept and Expert, or introducing a difficulty slider to give more control over the experience.
“It’s truly ridiculous,” Reddit user plasmaSunflower said on the topic of Oblivion Remastered’s difficulty. “After a while Adept is just too easy, so I’ve been playing on Expert and I die eight times every dungeon and go through like 30 points, it’s insane.”
Other players suggest ideas like a keyring feature or separate tab for keys to help reduce inventory clutter as well as the ability to change a character’s appearance after exiting the game’s introductory sequence. Keeping in line with more modern open-world games, players are also calling for the ability to summon your horse to your side from anywhere and more accessibility options, like being able to increase the font sizes for subtitles and other text.
Whether or not any of these suggestions actually make it into Oblivion Remastered remains to be seen, but it seems like Bethesda is at least open to more changes, which should give players some hope.
While Oblivion Remastered doesn’t officially support mods (another frequent suggestion from the playerbase), in true Bethesda RPG fashion, players have wasted no time creating mods for the PC version of the game anyways. Mod creators have already addressed some of the complaints players have listed above, such as one that adds more granular difficulty sliders and another that adds a horse whistle to summon it from a distance.
In GameSpot’s Oblivion Remastered review, we called Bethesda’s latest a remaster that walks the line between familiarity and freshness, while still preserving the rough edges that give the original game its character. One of the game’s original developers recently reacted to Oblivion Remastered, stating in an interview that they didn’t think the word “remaster” did the game justice, calling it something closer to “Oblivion 2.0.”
