This story contains spoilers for HBO’s The Last of Us.
This past Sunday’s episode of The Last of Us was the first to air since Joel (Pedro Pascal) was killed off in Episode 2. For the Episode 3 intro, HBO made a heartbreaking update that some might have missed.
The intro sequence used to show both Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) standing side by side, but after Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) brutally murdered Joel, he’s been erased from the slide. Ellie now stands alone.
It’s a somber change that might have gone unnoticed by many viewers, considering lots of people tend to hit the “skip” button when the opening credits come up.
Joel was killed off in The Last of Us: Part II, so viewers of the show who played the game or knew the story understood that his death was coming. But many were surprised that it happened so soon in Season 2.
Despite Joel’s death, he’ll appear in Season 2 a lot more, showing more of his relationship with Ellie. “We do get to see them quite a bit together this season. And we also get to see interesting things happening with them–more, I think, than what we saw in Season 1,” showrunner and writer Craig Mazin said.
For more, find out what the cast and crew had to say about Joel’s death. There are four more episodes coming in Season 2. New episodes of The Last of Us air Sundays at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
