Sony has revealed a new first-party studio called TeamLFG. This studio is composed of former Bungie developers who were spun off to form their own studio during Bungie’s mass layoffs last year.
The unveiling of TeamLFG happened on PlayStation Blog, where the new Bellevue, Washington-based studio teased what it is working on. “Our first game is a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games,” a statement from TeamLFG explains. “Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.”
That description, as well as SIE Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst’s admission that this studio “originated at Bungie,” seems to affirm that TeamLFG is working on a game first teased by Bungie in 2023. It was one of several incubation projects spun off at the Destiny 2 maker in the early 2020s, but unlike Marathon it will not be officially released by Bungie. Last summer, Bungie cut around 17% of its workforce. As part of that process, many developers were laid off. Some were integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment, while others were spun off to form what would become TeamLFG.
As a studio, TeamLFG says it is “passionate about exceptional action-based gameplay, moment-to-moment game feel, and richly social virtual worlds.” That emphasis on social gaming can be seen in the fact that the LFG in the studio’s name is supposed to stand for “Looking For Group.” TeamLFG also says it wants to deeply incorporate player feedback into the development process and will be holding early access playtests for its new game.
The first game from TeamLFG does not currently have a title or release window. Bungie recently revealed Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate expansion will launch on July 15.
