Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse has announced that all US players will need to verify their age later this month. The company says that it will roll out an age-verification process starting May 20, and failure to do so by July 2026 could result in a player’s account being suspended, notifications paused, and their friends list deleted. The process for this will be required during login or when a new account is created.

HoYoverse says it is now required by US law to verify the age of US-based players. The studio recently reached a $20 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, which bars it from selling loot boxes to children under the age of 16 without parental consent.

“Genshin Impact deceived children, teens, and other players into spending hundreds of dollars on prizes they stood little chance of winning,” the FTC said after HoYoverse agreed to pay the fine. “Companies that deploy these dark-pattern tactics will be held accountable if they deceive players, particularly kids and teens, about the true costs of in-game transactions.”

As part of the settlement, HoYoverse will be required to disclose the odds of its loot boxes and delete any personal information gathered from players under the age of 13 years.

Beyond this change, regular players can look forward to a collaboration between Genshin Impact and beauty brand Charlotte Tilbury, as two limited-edition beauty boxes will go on sale soon. HoYoverse will also launch one of its other popular ARPGs on Xbox Series X|S next month, as Zenless Zone Zero lands on the Microsoft consoles in June.
