First Book In Joe Abercrombie’s New Fantasy Series Is Finally Here

Joe Abercrombie’s highly anticipated epic fantasy novel The Devils releases this week (May 13). The Devils is the first novel from the bestselling author since 2021, and it kicks off a brand-new series. Devils is Abercrombie’s first series of adult novels outside of the world of The First Law, the series that has made him one of the most popular fantasy novelist’s of the 21st century. Needless to say, fans have really been looking forward to this one. Amazon featured The Devils on its list of the best sci-fi and fantasy novels of the month, and the hardcover is rapidly ascending the retailer’s bestseller charts.

The Devils is available in a beautiful hardcover edition for $27 (was $30) at Amazon. If you haven’t read The First Law Trilogy, Amazon is offering a 50% discount on the three-book box set that drops the price to $29.32 (was $59).

The 560-page hardcover of The Devils isn’t technically labeled a “deluxe edition,” but publisher Tor Books included a few flourishes often seen in collectible editions. The black dust jacket features a skull with candles for horns. One cool small detail is how the letters in the title are burning from the flames. Removing the jacket reveals a cover with an ornate red border and a pentagram imprinted in the center. Nodding to the themes, the cover art makes The Devils look like an occult book used to summon demons.

When you open the front and back covers, you’ll find full-color portraits. In addition to the endpaper portraits, you’ll find an annotated, two-page map with lots of little details, including character sketches and buildings that appear throughout the adventure. Full-page pencil illustrations of characters are included at the start of at least some of the chapters.

The Devils is an action-packed adventure with the grimdark tone Abercrombie is known for. Like the author’s other books for adults, The Devils is filled with bloody action sequences and dry humor. Told from alternating viewpoints in fictionalized version of medieval Europe, the adventure follows an unexpected group of antiheroes who escort a street rat named Alex to Troy when she learns she’s actually a princess and heir to the throne. Princess Alexia embarks on her road trip with the morally sound Brother Diaz, a peculiar vampire named Balthazar, an elf who is partially invisible, a magician specializing in corpse magic, an immortal knight, and a werewolf with a soft side.

The Devils is Joe Abercrombie’s first novel since The Wisdom of Crowds concluded The Age of Madness Trilogy in 2021. Age of Madness, like most of the author’s novels and story collections, is part of the wider First Law universe. The First Law is also the title of Abercrombie’s first trilogy, which began with the author’s debut novel, The Blade Itself, in 2006. In addition to the pair of trilogies, the author has written three standalone novels and two short story collections within The First Law. Abercrombie is also the author of a trilogy of novels for young adults called Shattered Sea.
