Netflix’s BioShock movie remains in development, director Francis Lawrence confirmed in an interview, adding that “it’s a tricky adaptation” that will take time to get right.
Lawrence told IGN that he just recently got a new draft of the BioShock movie script, and he took a meeting with writer Justin Rhodes on May 7. Rhodes was a writer on Terminator: Dark Fate and the video game anthology series Secret Level. A previous draft was written by Blade Runner 2049’s Michael Green.
“It’s a tricky adaptation, so there’s lots of things to figure out and to get right,” Lawrence said of the BioShock movie.
Lawrence also discussed the “regime changes” at Netflix that saw Dan Lin take over for Scott Stuber, with a mandate of increasing quality. Producer Roy Lee said in 2024 that the BioShock movie was scaled back to become a more “personal” film in the wake of the regime change at Netflix.
Despite the upheaval, Lawrence said of the BioShock movie, “I think we’re in a pretty good place, honestly.”
Lawrence previously directed multiple Hunger Games movies, including the newest one, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. He has numerous upcoming projects, including Constantine 2 and I Am Legend 2, so there is no word yet on when or if he will make the BioShock movie.
It’s still early days for the BioShock movie, but The Boys star Jack Quaid has said he’s interested in appearing in the movie because the franchise has “such a rich lore.”
As for the BioShock game series, 2K’s Cloud Chamber Studios is developing the next entry. However, it’s early days for the game, too, and we don’t know much beyond the fact that series creator Ken Levine is not involved.
