Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake launches on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 30. The new game features ground-up remakes of the first two Dragon Quest games in one package, and just like 2024’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, they will feature new “HD-2D” visuals, re-recorded soundtracks, updated gameplay, and even new content to flesh out both adventures. Preorders for Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake are live at multiple online retailers, and grabbing the game early gets you a DLC pack featuring helpful stat-boosting items. There’s also a carry-over bonus you can unlock by importing your save data from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Dragon Quest I+II HD Remake Preorder Bonus
All Dragon Quest I+II HD Remake preorders include the Trouble-Free Travel Kit as a preorder bonus, which offers the following in-game items to give your party a stat boost to make the early hours of Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II a bit easier:
- One pair of Elevating Shoes
- 3x Seeds of Strength
- 3x Seeds of Defense
- 3x Seeds of Agility
- 3x Seeds of Life
- 3x Seeds of Magic
The Trouble-Free Travel Kit is only available as a preorder bonus, but it’s available for all platforms.
As mentioned above, if you have Dragon Quest III HD Remake save data on the same platform you purchase and play Dragon Quest I+II HD Remake on, you’ll also unlock The Marvellous Makeover Kit carry-over bonus, which includes the following in-game costumes you can equip on your characters:
- Dog Suit (Dragon Quest I)
- Cat Suit (Dragon Quest II)
The Marvellous Makeover Kit carry-over bonus is not a preorder incentive, so you can unlock the extra costumes even if you don’t pick up Dragon Quest I+II HD Remake until after launch.

Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Standard Edition includes a full copy of the game, plus the Trouble-Free Travel Kit if you preorder and the Marvellous Makeover Kit carry-over bonus if you have Dragon Quest III HD Remake save data. You can preorder physical copies of Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X at Amazon and Walmart. Digital preorders are also available on consoles and Steam.

Unlike the version of the game on other platforms, Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Switch 2 Edition does not include the full game on the cartridge. Instead, ot’s one of the Switch 2’s many Game-Key Card releases. These are boxed copies of the game that include a physical card that you insert into the Switch 2 to unlock the digital version of the game. This means you have to download the full game from the eShop before you can play it, though you’re able to play Game-Key Card games on multiple systems, share them with others, or trade them in just like a standard physical version.
Other than the Game-Key Card difference, Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Switch 2 Edition is identical to the other versions in terms of included content. It gets you access to the full game, the preorder bonus if you purchase before launch, and the carry-over bonus if you import save data from the Switch version of Dragon Quest III HD Remake. Preorders are available at Amazon.
It’s also worth noting that the Switch version of the game will be playable on Switch 2. We don’t yet know how the two versions will compare in terms of performance–it’s likely the Switch 2 version will look and run better overall–but the content should be identical. So, if you’re intent on owning a physical version with the full game on the cartridge, and plan to play on Switch 2, grabbing the previous-gen Switch version is another option.
$150 | Releases October 30

Along with the standard edition of the game, Square Enix is also offering a $150 Collector’s Edition that includes a physical copy of the game on Switch, PS5, or Xbox Series X, or Game-Key Card on Switch 2, all preorder and carry-over bonuses, and a batch of exclusive collectibles and DLC content. Here’s everything in the Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Collector’s Edition:
- Dragon Quest I + II HD Remake base game
- 12 Acrylic Character & Monster Figures
- 2 Exclusive Downloadable Wallpapers
- The Outstanding Outfit Kit with the following in-game equipment items: 1x Strength Ring, 1x Pair of Slime Earrings, 1x Mad Cap, 1x Arriviste’s Vest
Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake Collector’s Edition is available to preorder exclusively at Square Enix’s online store.
If you’re wondering why Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is launching a year after the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, it’s because Dragon Quest III is a prequel story that takes place before the first two games, and all three make up what is known as the “Erdrick Trilogy.” These are some of the few Dragon Quest games with overt connections in their storylines, but while III is a prequel, each game takes place hundreds of years apart, so you don’t necessarily have to play III first (the original version released after the first two, after all). Nevertheless, if you’re itching to play some classic Dragon Quest and want to experience the trilogy’s in-game saga chronologically, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is worth picking up–and as luck would have it, you can pick up physical copies on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X for just $40 (was $60).
It’s also worth noting that the latest mainline entry in the series, Dragon Quest 11, also calls back to the original trilogy in multiple ways–though we won’t spoil the specifics. If you’re curious to see how everything connects or feel like playing a more modern take on the Dragon Quest RPG formula, you can grab Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC–and PC players can even grab it for just $16.40 (was $40) at Green Man Gaming.
Several other Dragon Quest games are on sale at Green Man Gaming, including Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Builders 2, which take place in alternate timelines that explore the “bad” endings of Dragon Quest 1 and 2, respectively. While they play more like Minecraft and other crafting-survival games, both are stuffed with classic Dragon Quest charm, and feature a healthy dose of RPG mechanics that make for a more structured, story-focused game than your average Minecraft-like adventure. You can also save on the physical edition of the Pokemon-esque spin-off Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince at Amazon.
