Mario Kart World Has An Unexpected Co-Developer

Nintendo didn’t develop Mario Kart World totally on its own. Now that the game is out, it’s been discovered that Nintendo sought help from other studios, both internal and external.

Xenoblade developer Monolith Soft, which is owned by Nintendo, announced on social media that it contributed to the game’s character designs and environments. The studio previously worked with Nintendo on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Another Nintendo-owned company, 1-Up Studio, contributed to Mario Kart World as well. The studio also worked on Super Mario 3D World, Ring Fit Adventure, Super Mario Odyssey, and other Nintendo games.

In terms of external support, Bandai Namco announced that it “partially produced” visual assets for Mario Kart World’s courses, characters, and more.

Mario Kart World, which is Nintendo’s first $80 game, is out now as a launch title for the Switch 2. The game mixes things up with the way its tracks are set in a big, interconnected world–but don’t call it an open-world title.

Mario Kart World is available to buy on its own or through a $500 Switch bundle, which represents a significant savings over purchasing the game and system separately. Some retailers have Switch 2 units in stock today, and you can consult GameSpot’s Switch 2 buying guide to learn more.
