Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us wrapped last month, which set up Season 3 to go back and show Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) point of view on her first day in Seattle. We don’t have a premiere date for Season 3, but the composer for the show might have let slip that Season 4 is in the works.
Talking on the The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast (via GamesRadar) composer Jake Staley vaguely hinted that a fourth season is on the way: “There’ll be at least two more seasons, no question. At least, that’s all I’m gonna say.”
Backing this up, showrunner Craig Mazin has now said it would be impossible to tell the story he and his team have in mind in anything fewer than four seasons. He even expects Season 3 will have to be longer than Season 2.
“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season,” Mazin told Collider. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth.” Before this, HBO management said The Last of Us would likely end after its fourth season.
With how the seasons are constructed for the show’s narrative, and to have Abby essentially getting her own season to fill in the gap of the story from Season 2, the culmination of everything in a fourth season would work best. However, Season 3 of The Last of Us is likely still a long time off, as the new season hasn’t started filming yet.
Fans of the show are used to long waits, as Season 1 wrapped up in March 2023, and it wasn’t until April 2025 that Season 2 premiered. If that schedule holds, viewers may not get The Last of Us Season 3 until 2027. While fans of the games are still waiting for any confirmation of a Part 3, even five years later.
