BioShock Movie Gets A Key Update About Its Story

Netflix’s BioShock movie remains in development, and now a key detail about the story has been revealed. Producer Roy Lee said in a new interview that the movie is based on the first BioShock game.

“Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps,” Lee told The Direct, before confirming that the film is “definitely” based on the 2007 original.

The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is attached to direct the BioShock movie, and Lee confirmed it will be the director’s next film after The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. That film is in production now in Spain and due for release in November 2026.

Also in the interview, Lee confirmed that the BioShock movie’s script is “just being worked on right now.” It was previously reported that Blade Runner 2049’s Michael Green and Terminator: Dark Fate’s Justin Rhodes contributed to versions of the script.

Lee went on to say that one of the reasons why Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk–which releases on September 12–even happened at all was because the BioShock movie was delayed due to the need for more script work.

When the script for BioShock was coming together, Lawrence made The Long Walk and was already committed to doing Sunrise on the Reaping next. “So it’s just waiting for him whenever the Hunger Games is completed,” Lee said about when Lawrence will start making BioShock.

Lee said in 2024 that the BioShock movie was scaled back to become a more “personal” film in the wake of the regime change at Netflix that reportedly sought quality over quantity and more manageable budgets.

As for the BioShock game series, a remake of the first game was reportedly canceled. The next entry in the main series remains in development but recently suffered setbacks and layoffs at its developer.
