Gearbox’s Borderlands 4 officially launches on September 12, but it’s already available for PC–and on Steam, it’s putting up big numbers.
Steam’s own public stats show that Borderlands 4 is Steam’s top-selling title globally and in the US. It has exceeded 175,000 concurrent players to rank as Steam’s No. 4 most-played game today.

That’s more concurrent players than any previous Borderlands game ever achieved. Borderlands 2, which is the best-selling entry in the series, reached a record of 124,678 peak concurrent players and was the record-setter for peak concurrent players in the Borderlands franchise until today. Borderlands 3, meanwhile, topped out at 93,820 peak concurrent players. That game, however, was exclusive to the Epic Games Store at launch.
Borderlands 4 is also available on PC via the Epic Games Store, so the results on Steam only account for a portion of the game’s total audience on PC. The looter-shooter is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later today, with a Switch 2 edition arriving in early October.
GameSpot’s Borderlands 4 review scored the game a 7/10. Reviewer Jordan Ramee wrote, “It’s the most mechanically sound Borderlands game to date, and the various Vault Hunters each present an entertaining opportunity to tackle the game in a different way.”
