Minecraft Movie Boss Talks Chicken Jockey Craze And A Sequel

Warner Bros. movie boss Jesse Ehrman has discussed A Minecraft Movie, saying he didn’t expect the “chicken jockey” phenomenon to kick off as it has, while also saying the company would be silly to not make a sequel.

Speaking to Financial Times, Ehrman said, “I’d be lying if I said I knew that [chicken jockey] would be a thing, but it was something that we talked about.”

The executive added: “You can’t account for the emergent behavior and the things that people connect with. You just want to create a movie that feels fun and authentic to people’s engagement and experience with the game. And if you’re rigorous about that, then these things can happen.”

What even is a Chicken Jockey?

In the Minecraft lore, a chicken jockey refers to a baby zombie who is riding on the back of a chicken. It’s apparently a very rare thing to see in Minecraft.

A Minecraft Movie is filled with Easter eggs and references about Minecraft, and this one in particular sent fans into a frenzy. When the chicken jockey scene played out in A Minecraft Movie, some fans hurled popcorn and jumped around to celebrate, prompting some theaters to issue warnings and disclaimers about respecting other moviegoers. In at least one case, someone brought a real, live chicken to a movie theater.

Director Jared Hess responded to the fan frenzy around A Minecraft Movie, which in some cases involved the police being called. Speaking to EW, Hess said, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called.”

The director went on to say “it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn,” so he found it funny that the cops were called. “Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments,” he said.

Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten said in 2017 that a chicken jockey is “a zombie that rides a chicken,” and that it was created partly a a joke.

“They are quite scary because they’re very aggressive. We had a huge problem with, er, when the zombies, they spawn and despawn all the time in the game, but with the chickens, they always remain. So for a while we had a problem that they would just fill the caves with chickens,” Bergensten said.

A Sequel Seems Like A Sure Thing

Also in the interview, Ehrman said fans can likely look forward to A Minecraft Movie 2. Before this we’d heard other reports of a potential sequel, and now Ehrman is joining the chorus.

“I mean, we’d be foolish not to,” he said. “The fans want more, so hopefully we’ll be able to figure something out.”

It was recently reported that Warner Bros. was close to finalizing deals for a sequel, and of course that makes sense, considering A Minecraft Movie has earned more than $700 million worldwide. It is now the No. 2 highest-grossing video game movie of all time, only trailing The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Only 140 movies in the history of film have made more money than A Minecraft Movie.
