Elder Scrolls 6 “Obviously” Being Worked On Amid Oblivion’s Remaster, Todd Howard Says

Fans who would rather have The Elder Scrolls VI over the surprise release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, rest assured–Bethesda is working on it.

During the Oblivion Remastered reveal stream, Bethesda Game Studios head and creative director Todd Howard didn’t have much to say about the upcoming next installment in the RPG franchise, but did let fans know it’s still in the works.

“Obviously we’re working on the sixth chapter, but what’s great about The Elder Scrolls is being able to look back at all of the chapters–Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Arena,” Howard said. “Each of them try to define role-playing games and open-world games for their generation.”

The wait for The Elder Scrolls VI, however, is likely to be a long one. As one Reddit user noted earlier this year, The Elder Scrolls VI’s announcement trailer from June 2018 recently reached a sad milestone. The amount of time between the game’s announcement to now has surpassed the amount of time between when The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released and The Elder Scrolls VI was announced.

Howard himself has wondered if Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI too early, stating he “probably would’ve announced it more casually.”

In 2023, a Microsoft document as part of its trial against the FTC in relation to its acquisition of Activision Blizzard said The Elder Scrolls VI wouldn’t be coming to PlayStation 5 and wouldn’t release until 2026 at the earliest. Bethesda’s since retired head of publishing, Pete Hines, said around the same time that fans shouldn’t expect to hear news about The Elder Scrolls VI “anytime soon” and that more information was still years away.
