Unknown Worlds–the studio behind 2014’s terrifying underwater adventure, Subnautica–has released a new developer vlog detailing the studio’s progress on the long-awaited Subnautica 2, which was officially announced last October.
The vlog gives players their first close-up look at one of the game’s most anticipated features: a four-player co-op mode that allows players to explore the depths of an alien planet with friends by their side–a stark contrast from the original game’s solo journey through the deep.
“For the first time, you’ll have the chance to experience Subnautica 2 with your friends in co-op,” design lead Anthony Gallegos explained, showing off footage of multiple players exploring the underwater world.
The original Subnautica didn’t come with a co-op mode, but players were so eager to explore the game’s alien ocean with friends that modders eventually created their own co-op mode, and it’s clear that Unknown Worlds has kept a keen eye on what players want from the game’s sequel.
“We’ve taken everything that we’ve learned from our experience on [Subnautica and its prequel, Subnautica: Below Zero], and we’ve poured it into Subnautica 2,” Gallegos said. “We’re working with veterans of the Subnautica series, but have also brought on some new faces so you know you’ll be in good hands.”
Subnautica 2 differs from its predecessors in other ways as well. Unlike the previous entries in the series–which took place on a planet simply known as 4546B–Subnautica 2 will take place on a different alien planet, and will feature different biomes, vehicles, and creatures (including Leviathans). But the game does bear some resemblance to previous entries in the series. Just like the studio’s original undersea thrillers, Subnautica 2 will be launching in early access to give players a chance to voice their opinions on the game before its official release. The early access version of the game is set to launch sometime in 2025, though an official date has not yet been announced.
“You’ll be there when we first add new vehicles, craftables, biomes, and Leviathans,” Gallegos said of the game’s upcoming early access launch. “And you’ll be able to tell us exactly what you think as we continue to develop the game alongside you.”
Subnautica 2 is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
