A new report has emerged that shines a light on just how profitable the 2024 video game movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was. According to Deadline, Paramount’s movie starring Jim Carrey as two Robotniks and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic pulled in a profit of more than $100 million.
At the box office, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brought in $236 million in the US and $255 million internationally for a total of $491.9 million worldwide. Deadline’s sources said Paramount kept $225 million of the box office haul, while also earning $90 million from the movie’s home video release and $150 million in TV and streaming revenue. In total, the movie’s revenue came to an estimated $465 million.
In terms of expenses, Deadline estimated that production costs for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came to $122 million (split between Paramount and Sega), with Paramount spending more than the entire movie’s budget, or $125 million, on advertising. Other expenses include $35 million in residuals and distribution expenses, $24.4 million in interest and overhead, and $35 million paid to actors as part of “participant” payments.
In total, Deadline estimated the movie had $341.4 million in total expenses. Subtracted from the estimated $465 million in total revenue, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reportedly ended up making a $123.6 million profit. Just how much Sega might have earned from that, however, is unknown.
With that much in profit, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is estimated to be the No. 10 most profitable blockbuster of 2024. Deadline plans to reveal the rest of the top 10 in the time ahead.
In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was named the overall most-profitable blockbuster that year–video game movie or otherwise–bringing $959 million in revenue against $400 in expenses for a profit of $559 million.
The three Sonic the Hedgehog movies have combined to bring in more than $1 billion at the box office, and with the third movie landing profitably, it’s unsurprising that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is coming in 2027.
The biggest video game movie so far in 2025 is A Minecraft Movie, which has earned more than $700 million worldwide. The next video game movie set for release is Sony’s Until Dawn, which arrives on April 25. It’s not expected to bring in anywhere near as much money, with tracking estimates saying it could earn between $8 million-$10 million for its first weekend in the US; it reportedly had a $15 million budget.
