How To Find And Use Minecraft Mushrooms

Mushrooms in everyday life are pretty standard. Not in Minecraft, though. Chuck some bonemeal on them and they have the potential to grow to intimidatingly towering heights. If you look carefully at specific Minecraft mobs, namely suspiciously red cows, you might find mushrooms growing on their backs. There are plenty of places to find mushrooms, and even more ways to use them. In this guide, we’ll tell you all we need to know, including whether or not you can grow them in the same way as lots of other Minecraft crops.

How to get mushrooms in Minecraft

Minecraft mushrooms can be found in a variety of locations. You can harvest them with anything. Mining a huge mushroom block will drop as many as two mushrooms of the same color, and having the Minecraft enchantment Fortune on your tools will not affect how many mushrooms are dropped.

A mushroom will break instantly and drop as itself if the block underneath it is moved or destroyed, if a fluid flows over it, or if the block next to it changes state.

Mushrooms will naturally generate in poorly-lit areas. Each chunk then has a 12.5% chance to spawn red mushrooms or a 25% chance to generate brown mushrooms. Unlike most plants in the game, mushrooms seem able to generate on top of nearly any type of block. They generate on surfaces in swamp, mushroom fields, and old growth taiga biomes, as well as anywhere in the Nether.

Huge mushrooms are plentiful in the Mushroom Fields biome.

If you stumble across a witch’s hut, it will have a mushroom in a flower pot somewhere inside. While there are many Java vs Bedrock similarities, one difference is that mushrooms can be found on fallen oak, birch, spruce, or jungle trees in Bedrock.

If you’re lucky enough to find the rare Mushroom Fields biomes, using shears on a Mooshroom cow will drop five mushrooms of the same color, but the Mushroom cow will be transformed into a normal one.

Finally, mushrooms can be bought from the Wandering Trader and cost one emerald.

How to use mushrooms in Minecraft

You can plant and grow mushrooms on almost any block, but not slabs or stairs. Brown and red mushrooms grow at the same rate. When you add bonemeal to a planted mushroom, it can grow into a huge mushroom of the same color, as long as it is on grass, dirt, or moss in low light. It will also need a 7x7x8 clear space to grow into a huge mushroom.

After planting, a mushroom has the chance to spread to a nearby block as long as there are fewer than five in the surrounding area.

Brown mushrooms, although almost invisible, do give off a very dim light. They do not give off light if they’re in a flower pot.

You can use mushrooms to create many things, the most useful of which is Mushroom Stew. You’ll need a bowl, red mushroom, and brown mushroom to make it, and it’s effective in satiating hunger. Similarly, using cooked rabbit, carrot, baked potato, and any mushroom with a bowl creates Rabbit Stew. A red mushroom, brown mushroom, bowl, and any flower will make Suspicious Stew, where the flower used will determine the status effect given when you drink it. Finally, a brown mushroom, sugar, and a spider eye will create a Fermented Spider Eye for use in brewing potions.
