Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 are both finally in people’s hands, and the new Mario Kart game has tons of unlockables to earn. One of those unlockables is a mode returning from previous games, Mirror Mode, which has you race through mirrored versions of the tracks in Mario Kart World, giving a fresh perspective and another way to play. While Mario Kart World doesn’t convey what the requirements are for unlocking this mode, the community has worked together to narrow it down.
How to unlock Mirror Mode
To unlock Mirror Mode you are going to need to put in some work, as it requires you to play through all of the cups–including the unlockable Special Cup, which features Rainbow Road–both Circuit and Knockout, in addition to earning some rewards in the free roam mode.
Mario Kart World does not convey what you have or haven’t done to unlock this mode, so make sure you meet the following requirements, which have been partially confirmed by some members of the community, thanks Reddit.
Mirror Mode Unlock Requirements:
- Complete all Grand Prix Cups on 150cc
- Complete all Knockout Tour Cups on 150cc
- Complete at least 10 missions (the P-Switches in Free Roam)
- Get at least 10 Peach Medallions in Free Roam
- Get at least 10 Question Panels in Free Roam
With all of these requirements met, you will need to complete the Special Cup again, and a new cutscene should play after the credits. It doesn’t seem like you need to complete the Special Cup on 150cc again to trigger the cutscene, but it might be worth just playing it at that speed to start.
Since Mario Kart World won’t indicate what you are missing, you need to be extra thorough. Make sure to click into each cup in both Grand Prix and Knockout Tour to verify you did them on 150cc. The comments seem mixed on if you need to place well in either mode for it to count, but if you see a checkmark next to 150cc instead of a trophy, you should play again until you get a trophy. There also might be some coin and driving distance requirements, but it’s unclear, so if you are positive you meet all of the above requirements and Mirror Mode doesn’t unlock, continue playing in Free Roam, collecting coins and completing the smaller missions.
You must complete the Special Cup again to get the unlock to happen, that is the only way to trigger the unlock cutscene once the requirements are met.
