The official The Legend of Zelda Movie account has appeared on social media, and Nintendo fans are pointing out how strange it is that Sony Pictures seems to be running the account. But there is a simple and understandable reason for this.
The page follows just two accounts: Sony Pictures and PlayStation. It doesn’t follow any accounts related to Nintendo, which of course created The Legend of Zelda franchise and develops the games.
The account is likely linked to Sony because Sony Pictures itself is co-financing the movie with Nintendo, with Sony Pictures handling the theatrical distribution of the movie. Nintendo is financing more than 50% of the costs. Given Sony Pictures is distributing the movie, it stands to reason that it might have control of the account. For its part, Nintendo has made announcements about the movie, like the cast reveal, via the Nintendo account.
The Legend of Zelda movie was announced in 2023, at which time the business arrangement between Nintendo and Sony Pictures was disclosed. Marvel veteran Avi Arad is producing the film, along with Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo legend who created Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda Movie account on X carries the gold checkmark, meaning it’s an official account for an organization that was verified by the social media company.
When Nintendo and Sony Pictures announced a partnership for the Zelda movie, that prompted some puzzled responses from fans, and that’s happening again now that the social media account is up and running.
Why are Nintendo and Sony Pictures working together? The exact reasons are unknown, but it’s likely to do with all the money at stake. After The Super Mario Bros. Movie made more than $1.3 billion–it was the No. 2 movie worldwide in 2023–Nintendo no doubt had movie companies knocking at its doors to make a deal for another movie, and Sony Pictures ultimately got it done.
The live-action Zelda movie stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) is directing, but no further casting or story announcements have been made.
Nintendo and Sony worked together many years ago on a device referred to as the “Nintendo PlayStation,” but it was not meant to be. The falling out between Nintendo and Sony is reportedly part of what drove Sony to get into the gaming market to begin with.
Nintendo previously worked with Universal Pictures for The Super Mario Bros. Movie and is staying in business with that company for its upcoming sequel.
The Legend of Zelda live-action movie is coming in May 2027, which is about a year after the animated Mario movie sequel lands in April 2026. A Donkey Kong movie may also be in the works.
