They’re here! Or more specifically, the classic 1982 horror movie Poltergeist is back with a 4K Blu-ray collector’s edition from The Film Vault. Poltergeist’s Special Edition Steelbook has brand-new case art that recreates famous scenes from the film. The steelbook is packaged inside a cigar box alongside a handful of collectibles. All of the new artwork was designed by Matt Ferguson and Florey from The Film Vault.
Poltergeist Special Edition Steelbook is available now for $100 at Walmart. There’s also a steelbook-only edition that ditches the collectible inserts for $65. Both editions come with region-free 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs. The Film Vault is a series of limited editions of classic Warner Bros. and Universal movies from Vice Press, a UK company focused on licensed movie collectibles and artwork.
The Film Vault’s new editions of Poltergeist launched September 2 as part of the collection’s third wave. It was supposed to be joined by The Shining, but the new editions of Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror adaptation were delayed until October 3 in the US. In any case, The Shining Special Edition Steelbook and Solus Steelbook have been sold out since August 24.

For the art by Matt Ferguson and Florey, you’ve got an eerie recreation of the character Carol Anne’s ominous warning as she gazes into the TV set, or the infamous door that malevolent spirits and the Beast use to enter the world of the living. The included art cards also reference several of the iconic moments of horror from this supernatural thriller, as the Freeling family find themselves under siege by ghosts looking to adopt their youngest daughter.
$65 | Limited Edition

The Solus Edition of Poltergeist doesn’t include any of the extra physical content from the Collector’s Edition, but it does come with the limited-edition steelbook case with artwork of Carol Anne Freeling as she listens to a voice coming from inside the television set. The back of the case also has artwork of that rotten little clown doll, and on the interior, there’s a classic scene from the movie.

They Are Here: The Real World of the Poltergeists is a two-part documentary inherited from the 2008 Blu-ray release, and it features self-professed psychic mediums and paranormal investigators who insist that the mythology behind the events of Poltergeist might not be so far-fetched after all–even if their claims certainly are.
There’s also a brief look behind the scenes with the 1982 Making of Poltergeist featurette that includes quick interviews with the cast and crew–including director Tobe Hooper, actor Craig T. Nelson, and writer-producer Steven Spielberg–and the special features are capped off with the original Poltergeist theatrical trailer.
Poltergeist Series on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD

In case the Film Vault edition of Poltergeist sells out–or you don’t want to spend $65-$100–you can still get the entire series of spooky movies on Blu-ray right now. The standard 4K and Blu-ray release of Poltergeist comes with all the extra bonus content of the special editions listed above. The 4K Blu-ray edition is on sale for only $11.49 this week at Amazon.
The 1986 sequel Poltergeist 2: The Other Side released on 4K Blu-ray last year. In The Other Side, the Freelings take on the Beast one more time, as this evil spirit of a doomsday cult leader is hellbent on claiming the youngest member of the family for its nefarious purposes.
A threequel followed soon after in the form of 1988’s Poltergeist 3, and this time, Carol Anne Freeling’s battle against malicious spirits took place in a haunted skyscraper. Poltergeist 3 isn’t available on 4K Blu-ray, but you can get all three movies in a DVD box set for only $8.34 (was $15).
In 2015, Poltergeist was rebooted under Monster House director Gil Keenan. The film starred Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, and Jane Adams, and the remake was a moderate success at the box office overall. It’s only available on Blu-ray and DVD, but both editions are cheap.
